German IRDR National Committee convenes workshop on DRR between science and practice

IRDR’s National Committee in Germany (Deutsches Komitee Katastrophenvorsorge e.V. – DKKV) convened the 14th German National Forum on Disaster Preparedness and Prevention on 4-5 November 2014 at Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung UFZ, Leipzig. Under the heading “Akteure verbinden, Lösungen finden: Katastrophenvorsorge im Dialog zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis”, a number of topical issues were discussed with closer interaction between science, technology and practitioners in DRR. These include themes such as “resilience as a learning process”, “participatory approaches to civil protection”, “IT and communication strategies in DRR related organisations” and “IT solutions for preparedness”.

A presentation was also given by the Vice-Chair of UNISDR’s Science and Technology Advisory Group, Virginia Murray, who has been playing a critical role in advancing the idea of an international scientific advisory mechanism as member of the ICSU-led Science and Technology Major Group in the preparation of the World Conference on DRR. Also, some of the country’s best research work of young scientists in the field received awards sponsored by the national umbrella organization of the insurance industry.

The German Committee for Disaster Reduction (DKKV) is the officially nominated and confirmed National Platform for Disaster Reduction within the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) in Germany. DKKV has been nominated and confirmed by IRDR Science Committee (SC) as the IRDR National Committee for Germany in November 2010.
