IRDR Shuaib Lwasa presenting IRDR publication: Guide to Assessing Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (AIRDR Publication 1)

IRDR Science Committee Member Shuaib Lwasa gave a  presentation on Science and Practical DRR – role of universities/academia during the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction Public Forum (WCDRR Public Forum) last 17 March in Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

Organized by IRIDeS, Tohoku University and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), the session aimed to discuss how the academic contribution to DRR is strengthened in collaboration with other sectors.

The forum was composed of three sessions: 1. Bridging the gap between science and practice, 2. How can science and technology contribute to practical disaster risk reduction, and 3. Role of social science in DRR. A panel discussion was held after each of the sessions.

Prof. Fumihiko Imamura, Director of IRIDeS and Dr. Christopher Tremewan, Secretary General of APRU, gave opening speeches.

The event welcomed speakers from the academia, the private sector, NGO, government agencies and international organizations and served as a platform to discuss effective partnerships among various stakeholders and the role of academia in strengthening practical DRR and the preparedness capacity and resilience to natural disasters.
