Bridging Gaps in Science, Policy and Practice

AMCDRR2018 side-event Science and Technology-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Integrated Risk was organised by Integrated Risk Governance Project/Future Earth, Beijing Normal University, UNISDR ASTAAG with IRDR and APRU as the partners.

Prof. YE Qian, Executive Director of IRG, chaired this side event. Panellists from different international science and technology platforms and networks presented and discussed their plans and actions to deal with challenges in bridging gaps in science, policy and practice.

Prof. SHI Peijun, chair of UNISDR ASTAAG, illustrated the discipline construction of Disaster Risk Science. Prof. Rajib Shaw, chair of UN STAG, shared their project about KIDA (Knowledge-Interest-Desire-Action) and the science communication to enhance the community resilience. Prof. ZHANG Qiang from Beijing Normal University presented their research on flood and drought risk assessment in the context of climate change. Prof. Takako Izumi from Tohuku University shared the experiences on how to work with local governments and communities to help them understand disaster risk and lead the DRR projects. Dr. LEI Yu from Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment introduced the IRDR Flagship Project SiDRR(Silk Road Disaster Risk Reduction) and their effects to help the national DRR capacity building along the Silk Road Region.
