From 14-18 March 2015, the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (3rd UN WCDRR) was held in Sendai, Japan. It was attended by more than 4,000 delegates and representatives of 187 UN member states and civil society.
On the last day of the Conference, the first major agreement of the Post-2015 development agenda was adopted, a far reaching new framework for disaster risk reduction with seven targets and four priorities for action.

The IRDR Public Forum event was held on 15 March at Tohoku University, Kawauchi-kita Campus and focused on the Role of Science in Disaster Risk Reduction.

IRDR had been actively involved in the preparation of the conference leading with ICSU, the delegation of the Science and Technology Major Group. The preparatory process welcomed the participation and contributions of all relevant stakeholders, including parliaments, civil society, non-governmental organizations, national platforms for disaster risk reduction, focal points for the Hyogo Framework for Action, local government representatives, scientific institutions and the private sector, as well as organizations of the United Nations system and intergovernmental organizations.
