ICSU Regional Offices
In the first phase of the IRDR programme, efforts were made to connect ICSU regional initiatives and the global science plan for IRDR developed with input from all ICSU regions. Of particular importance in terms of developing a joint research and action agenda was the following SIDA-co-sponsored event: 2012, 13-14 September, Kuala Lumpur: Global-Regional Integration Workshop on Natural Hazards and Disasters
Subsequently, IRDR worked towards better alignment with the activities aimed at implementing ICSU ROs’ regional science plans on hazards and disasters. As these efforts continue, and especially during the envisaged review of the respective regional science plans, ICSU hopes that harmonisation will help avoid duplication, promote cooperation and peer learning, and send consistent messages to the science community, funding agencies and other stakeholders, thus increasing their support. Regional Committees were invited to SC meetings and to the dedicated meeting of National and Regional Committees held on 11-21 November 2014 in London.
The activities of RO’s in the domain of natural hazards and disasters included:
Regional Office for Africa (ICSU ROA), located in Pretoria, South Africa
It is to be noted that also the IRDR International Centre of Excellence on Risk Education and Learning (IRDR ICoE REAL), which builds on the PeriPeriU inter-university network, has a inter-regional reach across Africa.
